Gift Guide for Expecting Mothers

So, your bestie has just announced that she is pregnant and she has already started looking for cute onesies and nursery room furniture. Naturally, you’re excited to help as well, but where do you start? Your first instinct will probably be to look into cute baby clothes, but the reality of parenthood involves so much more than dressing up you baby in tiny dinosaur onesies. Sometimes, you have to be practical as well and, in addition to all the little knick-knacks, you should also consider these gift ideas:

Nursing Bra

A nursing bra is one of the must-haves of any new mother who will breastfeed her precious little one. Look for nursing clips that are easy to use and allow the cups to be wide opened for uncomplicated and quick breastfeeding. You should also look for a bra with four hook-and-eye fastenings for added comfort. While normal bras are made from a mix of viscose, cotton, and polyester, the maternity ones are made from cotton to allow the mom’s skin to breath. Thus, choose a bra made from fabrics that are breathable.

Prenatal massage

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful gift that you can offer to the expecting mother. During pregnancy, mothers experience normal discomforts such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, and headaches. Unfortunately, women can’t take painkillers during pregnancy, so a prenatal massage will help her relieve stress and promote overall wellness.

Stroller or infant car seat

The main concern of every parent-to-be is finding the best ways to keep their newborns safe once they arrive in this world.  Both strollers and infant car seats are essential for transporting the baby safely while traveling. This gift might be a little more expensive, but it is definitely something that every new parent would like to receive. When looking to buy an infant car seat, you should keep in mind that the rear-facing ones are the best at providing safety and support for babies under the age of 2. Car seats come with group numbers which are based on weight ranges, so when you are buying for a newborn, you should look for either Group 0 which is suitable for 0-10 kg or Group 0+ that is suitable for 0-13 kg. The rear-facing infant car seats also have a separate base which can be detached for the parents to use the seat as a baby carrier.

Pregnancy pillow

Many expecting moms have a difficult time finding a comfortable sleeping position. Pregnancy pillows are designed to support pregnant bodies and provide comfort while lying down. Gifting a pregnancy pillow to an expecting mother will help her have a good night’s sleep and reduce pregnancy pains. You can choose from different shapes, colors, and sizes, but the most important factor to consider is the quality of the material. You can buy pregnancy wedges in two styles including round pregnancy wedge pillow that looks like a filled in crescent moon or the triangular pregnancy wedge pillow. There are also two different styles of full-length pregnancy pillows such as the straight and flexible full-length pregnancy pillow. While flexible ones are cheaper, they are less supportive. Thus, you have to think about how much support the mom-to-be needs before choosing a style.

Baby diary

All parents want to immortalize first smile, first step, the first word spoken, or their very first at everything of their baby as they are starting this journey on our world. When buying a baby diary, look for one with room for notes, wishes, photos, and scans.  It would be wise to know the gender of the baby before choosing a color for a baby diary as there are also blue and pink ones with gender neutral pages. Using a pregnancy journal can help the expecting mother capture and hold onto all the meaningful memories.
